Physically challenged social worker and icon of the State’s literacy movement K.V. Rabia laid the foundation stone for a rehabilitation centre of the district panchayat at Chattipparamba in Kuruva panchayat, near here, on Wednesday. District panchayat president Suhara Mampad told a gathering here that the centre would be projected as a model for the country in the care of those with physical challenges.

The centre was being built at a cost of Rs.3 crore. The district panchayat had sanctioned Rs.50 lakh for the initial phase. Apart from the development funds of the local bodies, contributions from philanthropists too would be accepted. Ms. Mampad said the funds collected from the public would be used in areas where the Plan funds of the local bodies could not be spent. Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) State unit general secretary K.P.A. Majeed honoured Chembakasseri Umer Haji who donated 50 cents of land for the setting up of the centre.

District panchayat vice-president P.K. Kunhu inaugurated a fund-collection drive by accepting the initial donation from Mankarathodi Mammu Haji. District panchayat members Ummer Arakkal, V. Sudhakaran, Sakeena Pulpadan, and Salim Kuruvambalam; local civic body heads P. Usman and P. Subaida were among those who spoke.
