State must intervene in LPG issue

April 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST

A huge backlog in supply of LPG refills looms on many areas in the State owing to the strike by contractors transporting cylinders. It is said that it would take a month for the pending requests for refills to be cleared. The government should intervene with precise measures to ensure that the bookings are cleared quickly and the consumers are not inconvenienced.

The government should also ensure that such disruptions do not occur in future.

‘Sadyakoottu’

‘Sadyakoottu,’ the distribution of Vishu feast kits under the aegis of Green View, a forum for organic farmers, turned out to be an ordeal. Those who got coupons for the kits lined up at Green View’s counter put up on the premises of the Calicut Town Service Cooperative Bank. The distribution was scheduled from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Vishu. It was also mentioned that the kits would not be distributed beyond the scheduled time. I was among the many who had queued up for the kit that was priced at Rs.500 and meant for four persons. I purchased two coupons and reached the venue at 7.30 a.m. Though time went by and the queue got longer, there was no sign of the kits or authorised persons.

When the organisers were contacted, we were told that the kits would arrive in half an hour. When this did not happen, the crowd turned impatient.

Around 11.30 a.m., the secretary of the bank arrived. When he contacted the organisers, he was told that the kits could be obtained from a house at Kuthiravattom. We reached the place around 12.30 p.m. to collect the kits. A well-intended move was derailed by lack of foresight.
