Songs in memory of Gandhi’s visit

Members of the troupe are students in the age group of 13 to 17

The young talents of ‘Sanamargadarsini’ will welcome Gandhian and anti-corruption campaigner Anna Hazare to Kozhikode when he visits the city on Tuesday.

‘The Voice of Sanamargadarsini’, barely a month-old music troupe under the banner of Sanmargadarsini Reading Room and Library on Gandhi Road, will perform five songs, mainly patriotic, at the programme, organised by the Kerala Anti-Corruption People’s Movement to commemorate Gandhiji’s visit to Kozhikode in 1936, at Malabar Christian College on May 26.

The members of the troupe are all students in the age group of 13 to 17 from various schools in and around Kozhikode city.

Most of them have made their mark at the State School Arts Festival in various events.

Choir

The choir consists of four girls — Aiswarya Suresh, Malavika.S, Vidya.K.Anand and Anagha K.V. — and four boys — Akshay.K. Manoj, Umesh Krishna, Sarang Pramod and Yadu Nanda.

The orchestra comprises Keerthana S. Raj on keyboards, Gopika. R on violin, Amrithesh T. on tabla, Aditya Vinay on guitar, Amit Suresh Babu on rhythm pad and Kailasnath on bass guitar.

The troupe was launched in April 2015 under the tutelage of V.R. Ranjith, music teacher of Sanmargadarsini, and N.M. Syamjith, keyboard teacher. The troupe is currently practising under the guidance of noted performer M.S. Suresh Babu.

Major break

The first major break for the troupe came in the form of an opportunity to perform on Doordarshan recently as part of a programme to promote various schemes of the Union government.

The troupe composed and performed four songs on topics such as ‘Swach Bharath,’ ‘Sukanya Sarudhi Yojana,’ ‘Pradhanmanthri Jan Dhan Yojana,’ and one against drug abuse.

The programme will be telecast on DD Malayalam at 2 p.m. on June 7.

Their composition on drug abuse titled ‘Narakam theerkkum Panisalakalil’ will also be performed at the programme on Tuesday besides well known patriotic songs such as ‘Jai Jan Bharath,’ ‘Hind Desh Ke Nivasi,’ ‘Janmakaarini Bharatham’ and ‘Sare Jahan Se Acha’.
