It’s our duty to save nature: Minister

Six lakh saplings in 30 varieties were planted as part of the observation of World Environment Day in the district.

Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar also inaugurated a mission to protect 300 trees at the Nehru Park at an event jointly held by the Life Insurance Corporation of India and Department of Soil Survey and Soil Conservation here as part of the observation of the day. Mr. Sunil Kumar said conservation of natural resources was our duty. “Nature will protect us if we protect it. Economic safety alone will not ensure development. Development along with conservation of natural resources should be our aim,” he said. Name boards along with the scientific names were exhibited on the 300 trees at the Nehru Park to create awareness among public especially among children.

Haritholsavam (green festival) was also celebrated at the schools in the district to give the message ‘Learn beyond lessons.’ District Education Department distributed 3,16,000 handbooks and 3,90,000 seed packets in government and aided schools in the district. The district-level observation of the day that was held at Government Girl’s High School, Chalakudy East, stressed more on curbing the use of plastics. Similar celebration of Haritholsavam was held at GLP School, Kodaly.
