V.K. Sukanya to go wih Ajith story by K_Ragesh

The moment the girl, code number 115, completed singing Mathilekha mayunnu… , at the packed Town Hall on Friday, one thing was certain: it will be a surprise if she did not win the first prize.

There was no surprise. V.K. Sukanya came first in the light music competition of HSS girls at the State School Arts Festival. One is likely to hear her voice a lot more in the years to come. She is capable of carrying forward the festival’s great tradition of light music winners, which includes Yesudas, P. Jayachandran, Chithra, Sujatha, Venugopal, Minmini, and Najim Arshad. Sukanya might be an unfamiliar name for Malayalis, but she has a lot of fans in Tamil Nadu, where she was the second runner-up at the Super Singer Junior on Star Vijay two years ago. She has sung in a couple of Tamil films as well.

Still, she cherishes this victory a lot. “To win the first prize in light music has been a dream for me for the last five years,” said the Plus Two student at VMCEMGHSS, Chitttur (Palakkad), unable control her tears. “This was my only chance too, and I came here through the process of appeal. I had come second at the district festival.”

Though Sukanya, who had won two first prizes in Kathakali music at the HS section, had never qualified for the light music at the State festival. She showed what the festival had missed, as she came on top.
