The special police team investigating the sex racket case of 2007, registered at Pathanamthitta police station, has arrested Shemia, a 28-year-old woman from Kulashekharapati, near here, on Sunday.

Assistant Commissioner of Police V. Ajith, who arrested Shemia, said she was the daughter of the main accused, Sauda Beevi, 46.

The case was registered at Pathanamthitta police station 2007 on the basis of a complaint filed by a 36-year-old woman at Kulashekharapati. She had alleged sexual exploitation by a gang which promised jobs in Dubai. The racket had trapped around 300 other women in Dubai, she had said.

The woman moved the Kerala High Court, alleging indifference on the part of the Pathanamthitta police towards investigating the case. The court, in turn, directed the Inspector General of Police to submit an action-taken report of the case.

The IG conducted an inquiry into the alleged official lapses in the investigation process. G. Santhoshkumar and Sujatha, Sub Inspectors, have been placed under suspension. Departmental inquiry has been ordered against K. Sudhakaran Pillai, Circle Inspector of Police, and S. Sreekumar, SI, on the basis of the report.

Mr. Ajith said investigation was progressing fast and steps would be taken soon to arrest Sauda Beevi and her aide Ahmed, both believed to be in the United Arab Emirates.
