Administrative sanction has been granted for a Rs.75.5-lakh project for widening roads at the busy Gandhi Circle here under the MP’s local area development fund of P.K. Sreemathy, MP.

The project envisaged the widening of all the roads around the circle, an official press release here on Tuesday said. These narrow roads were experiencing traffic gridlocks.

A piece of land on the northern side of the District Collectorate would be given for road widening, the statement said, adding that some portion of land from the stretch between AKG Statue to the Library Council building would also be used for road widening.

The other side of the road from Vaidyuthi Bhavan to the KSRTC bus station would be widened by shifting the drainage, the release said.

On either side, the width of the road would be increased by one to two metres. The project also envisaged easing of the curve on the road that joins the National Highway and the Collectorate road without shifting the circle.

The widened part of the roads would be paved with bituminous concrete, the release said adding that the proceedings for inviting tenders for the works were in progress. The tenders received from contractors would be opened on June 17 and the work was expected to start by next month. By the year-end, the Gandhi Circle area would have a new look.
