Rs. 8-crore loss in rain in Malappuram

Damage to crops and property in two weeks

The district has suffered a loss of crops and property worth Rs. 8.09 crore in the torrential rain in the past two weeks, said District Collector K. Biju here on Monday.

The actual loss is, however, estimated to be much more than the official figures. Agriculture sector was the worst hit. Official figures indicated an agricultural crop loss of nearly Rs. 6 crore in 208.43 hectares.

As many as 54 houses were destroyed and 999 others suffered partial damage. Many houses were destroyed in Ponnani taluk. As many as 42 houses were destroyed in the rain on Sunday.

Fisheries Deputy Director has issued a warning to fishermen against venturing out to the sea in view of the forecast of heavy rain. As many as 23 people have been shifted to a relief camp set up at the Government Fisheries LP School, Parappanangadi.

As many as 13 people died in the district since the onset of the monsoon. When five people, including two children, died in Nilambur taluk, four people lost their lives in Tirurangadi taluk, and two people each died in Tirur and Perinthalmanna taluks.

The district got 2,177.51 ml rain so far. On Sunday alone, the district got 86.13 ml rain.

The Collector has asked the people to get in touch with the control room if any accident or calamity happened because of the rain.

The public should also alert the village or taluk offices when a situation arises, he said.
