The S.S. Kovil Road, connecting Thampanoor to the Housing Board junction, remained out of bounds for motorists and pedestrians through the weekend thanks to the incessant rain. Waist-level water is seen at this road frequently. During the ongoing Operation Anantha, the residents of Thoppu Colony had pointed out to the officials the reason for the continued flooding in the road. A side drain which connects the S.S. Kovil Road to the main canal running from Rajaji Nagar to Thampanoor was blocked off several years ago by private parties. Now, a hotel and some houses stand over this drain. The demolition drive is yet to take this route and until that happens, the problem at S.S. Kovil Road might remain, say the residents here.
As the city has been witnessing fast development in the last few years, commuters have started feeling the pressure of traffic congestion in several important junctions. Those passing through Thirumala are no exception. The absence of traffic personnel to regulate traffic at Thirumala junction during peak hours complicates the problem. While most of the two-wheeler riders manage to manoeuvre their way out, those commuting in cars are stuck. Pedestrians find it difficult to cross the road safely. The situation could only deteriorate.
In the absence of a traffic signal, the authorities must ensure the presence of a warden to regulate the movement of vehicles, at least during peak hours.
