Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Saturday called for concerted efforts by the Motor Vehicles Department, Road Safety Authority, police, and the PWD to reduce accidents and ensure road discipline in the State.

Launching the 25th National Road Safety Week observance at a function organised by the Motor Vehicles Department in the capital, Mr. Chandy said people, especially road users, should cooperate with law-enforcing agencies and follow the rules.

Pointing out that strict enforcement of rules had to be withdrawn following opposition from the people, Mr. Chandy said motorists were often provoked when those violating rules were not treated the same way.

Automatic enforcement using cameras and speed radars had started yielding results and should be extended to more areas, he said.

Presiding over the function, Transport Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said the MVD was working out schemes to prevent road accidents. The Minister said road conditions should further improve and stern enforcement was needed to bring down the accident rate in the State. K.Muraleedharan, MLA, delivered the keynote address.
