Hasty move

The decision of the State government to form the Kazhakuttam municipality can only be termed hasty. There have been no discussions or consultations with the stakeholders, especially citizens’ forums and residents associations.

This assumes more significance as the local body elections are scheduled to take place this year. The State Finance Commission had once recommended that such delimitation should be carried out only once in a decade. Also, it should be done at least 12 months prior to the local body elections. Everybody feels that the authorities have not given any serious thought to the implications of such actions. It will hinder the flow of funds from the Ministry of Urban Development for development projects in urban areas.

The overall development of the capital city will be affected. The capital has faced repeated neglect at the hands of our rulers. Also, removing wards from the Corporation to create a municipality is an unheard of practice.

Misuse of facility

The Sasthamangalam - Peroorkada road has been widened and the footpath paved well. But, bike and car racers are using the stretch to test their skills. People are also seen dumping kitchen waste on the pavement. The authorities should not hesitate to take action against such anti-social elements.
