Rain damage estimated at Rs.1 crore in Kottayam

The district administration has estimated the total loss of properties due to the heavy wind and rain that lashed parts of the district, mostly Meenachil taluk, on Thursday evening at Rs.1 crore.

The estimate has been arrived at on the basis of a preliminary inspection conducted by officials of the Revenue Department. A total of 124 houses were completely damaged in the district. Although the Agricultural Department was yet to conclude the process of ascertaining the agricultural losses, sources said crop loss was estimated in 80 hectares. As per the preliminary study, the total loss has been pegged at around Rs.62 lakh. The damage were reported from Kuravilangad, Marangattupally, Kurichithanam, Veliyannoor, Kanakkary, Kozha and Kurianad.

Finance Minister K.M. Mani has instructed the District Collector to distribute immediate compensation for those who were affected by the heavy wind and rain that lashed various parts of the district on Thursday, according to a press release issued here. Mr. Mani also sought a report by revenue officials after inspecting the affected areas.
