Plan to disband relief camps postponed

Incessant rain continued in Kannur district on Tuesday, causing mild landslips in some places in Iritty.

The intensity of the rain increased on Monday morning. The authorities had planned to disband the disaster relief camps in the area on Tuesday, but it was postponed owing to continuing showers.

Six relief camps continue to function in Iritty taluk.

“It has been raining since this morning and mild landslips occurred in some parts of the taluk,” said Iritty tahsildar K.K. Divakaran. He said the landslips on Tuesday had not caused any damage, but the inclement weather conditions delayed the plan to disband four camps and shift those housed there to their houses.

Minor landslips

Mild landslips were reported in the Keezhur, Ayyankunnu, Aralam, Kelakam and Kottiyur areas that were badly affected by the monsoon disaster. A footbridge at Ayyankunnu was washed away. The Revenue authorities have contacted the Army personnel camping in the area to restore the bridge.

“We closed the relief camp at Kottiyur this morning and later reopened it as the people who had left for their houese returned owing to incessant rain,” Mr. Divakaran said. The decision to disband the three camps at Vayathur village on Tuesday was also postponed, he added.
