One person missing in the sea

Three persons lost their lives and one person went missing in the seas in monsoon-related incidents in the State on Friday, according to reports from various districts.

In Alappuzha district, a 45-year-old man, Kunjomon, drowned in swirling flood flow at Kainakary in Kuttanad. An 18-year-old girl, Silmiya, drowned in a flooded field at Thiruchandoor in Kottayam district and in Ernakulam district, 44-year-old Suresh died when he fell into a flooded canal at Amballoor.

In Kollam district, a fishing boat capsized off the Thirumullavaram coast, near Kollam town. While five men in the boat swam ashore to safety, 19-year-old Livin went missing in the sea. All of them hailed from Thuvayur in Kanyakumari district. Those who swam to the shore safely are Paulose (48), Subash (23), and Varghese (55).

According to the control room opened at the government Secretariat to monitor monsoon incidents, more than 36,000 people were in relief camps in various flood-affected or sea erosion-hit areas in the State. In Kuttanad alone, 26,000 people were in relief camps. More relief camps were being opened in Kuttanad late Friday evening as the flood situation in the region was turning grimmer by the hour.

India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its bulletin on Friday, forecast widespread rainfall in Kerala for at least three more days. Rainfall can be heavy in isolated places.
