A quarter marathon will be held at Peravur here next month to promote physical fitness among the new generation and to highlight the importance of keeping villages and towns clean.

The ‘Green Peravoor 1/4 Marathon’ will be held on December 24 under the aegis of the Chamber of Peravur in association with the Jimmy George Foundation.

Organisers said the Peravur block panchayat, nearby panchayats, and social organisations were also supporting the event, which would be flagged off at 6.30 a.m.

The organisers said Peravur had a place in the Indian sports map as the place contributed athletes and sportsmen such as the late Jimmy George, Jose George, Salomi Xavior, Minimol Abraham, Poulose, and Boby George to Indian sports. The marathon was being organised to revive the sports culture that was on the wane.

In the open category of the event, entry fee is ₹600. The prize money is ₹50,000, ₹25,000, and 15,000 for the first, second, and third place winners. For women reaching the first three slots in the marathon, the prizes will be ₹10,000, ₹8,000 and ₹5,000 respectively. There will be separate prizes for school-going boys and girls.

A 3.5-km family-fun run/walk will also be held on the occasion. The route of the marathon has been planned to allow participants to enjoy the scenic beauty of the hill area.
