Protest against move to transfer Kerala University’s land

Published - October 10, 2013 01:09 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Bharatiya Janata Party will make a representation to Governor Nikhil Kumar, who is also the Chancellor of the University of Kerala, against the decision to assign 2.49 acres belonging to the university to a church and a community organisation.

Party spokesperson V.V. Rajesh said that the land in question opposite to the Thiruvananthapuram public library was transferred to the University of Travancore, which was later renamed University of Kerala, in 1937 and was vested with the university through a government notification in 1944.

The Cabinet had decided to assign the land to a community organisation on September 25.

Mr. Rajesh said the land, valued around Rs.250 crore, was being assigned to appease the minority community prior to the Lok Sabha polls.
