Probe into genuineness of threat letter sought

April 28, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - Palakkad:

DYFI says it has no branch named Mathur unit

The district unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has demanded a through police probe into the genuineness of a letter allegedly sent by its Mathur panchayat unit in Palakkad to SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan threatening to kill him and his son Thushar Vellappally if they continued their electoral campaign in Palakkad to defeat LDF candidates V.S. Achuthanandan and N.N. Krishnadas.

Addressing a press conference here, DYFI district president Nithin Kanicheri and secretary K. Premkumar said the DYFI had no branch with the name Mathur panchayat unit. The Mathur area in the Palakkad Assembly constituency came under two zonal committees of the DYFI. The leaders said they would lodge complaints with the District Police Superintendent and Cyber police wing against Mr. Vellappally and his followers for initiating a hate campaign against the DYFI through social media saying it was the DYFI that sent the letter to him.

“We have nothing against Mr. Natesan and his son campaigning in any part of Palakkad. They can cause no damage to the electoral prospects of the LDF candidates. Why should we murder Mr. Vellappally?”

The alleged letter threatened to kill Mr. Vellappally and his son in the same way RMP leader T.P. Chandrasekharan was killed, allegedly by CPI(M) activists. The DYFI leaders alleged that the letter was fabricated by the followers of Mr. Vellappally to keep him in the limelight.
