Poovarani case: 18-year jail term for first accused

District and Sessions Court-I (Special) Judge K. Babu on Friday sentenced the first accused Lizzy Tomy of Ayarkunnam to 18 years in prison in the Poovarani sex scandal case.

The court had found six of the 12 accused guilty in the case in which a minor girl was procured and sold for commercial sex.

She was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment under IPC 366 (a) (procurement of minor); seven years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs.1 lakh under IPC 372 (selling of minor); and four years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs.50,000 under 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy). The sentences will run concurrently. Others who have been found guilty include Jominy, her husband Jyothish, Thankamoni, Satheesh Kumar, and Rakhi. The second and third accused were found guilty under IPC 366, 372, and 373 and sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment and Rs.2 lakh fine each.

Their prison term will run concurrently and will have to undergo six years’ imprisonment. The fourth accused will have to undergo four years’ imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs.10,000. The sentences of the fifth accused will also run concurrently and will have to undergo six years’ imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs.1 lakh.

The sixth accused was sentenced to 14 years.
