Ranni magistrate court allows his plea

A magistrate court at Ranni on Monday allowed BJP leader K. Surendran’s plea that he be shifted to the Poojappura Central Prison here for reasons of personal safety and health.

Mr. Surendran, who is in judicial custody since his arrest at Nilackal on November 17, had expressed fear that CPI(M) inmates at the Central Prison, Kannur, would harm him if the police housed him there.

On Sunday, the police escorted Mr. Surendran to Kannur to produce him in a local court on the charge of threatening on Facebook, Deputy Superintendents of Police P.P. Sadanandan and Prince Abraham, investigating the murder of National Democratic Front activist Muhammad Fazal at Thalassery on October 22, 2006.

Mr. Surendran’s alleged post was in response to the confession of an RSS worker E. Subheesh that RSS workers, including himself, had a role in Fazal’s murder.

On Monday, the court granted Mr. Surendran bail in the case. The police escorted him back to the subjail, Kottarakara, where he is being held at present.

Medical attention

Mr. Surendran’s counsel had also requested special medical attention for the State general secretary of the BJP, who is reportedly a chronic diabetic.

He had earlier alleged that a functionary in the Chief Minister’s Office had hatched a conspiracy to harm him at the Central Prison, Kannur.

The prison has several CPI(M) workers sentenced to life for the murder of RMP leader T.P. Chandrasekharan.

Arrest

The police had arrested Mr. Surendran on the charge of upsetting the peace at the high-security zone at Nilackal. He and four other BJP workers were charged with cases relating to the violence at the sanctum sanctorum in October and November.
