A 10-member team from PKMM Higher Secondary School, Edarikode, emerged winners at the regional round of The Hindu Academic Pentathlon held here on Thursday. The team grabbed the title by defeating those from other 36 prominent higher secondary schools.
Students of Providence Girls Higher Secondary School lifted the runners-up trophy in the event, which was organised by The Hindu Future India Club in association with Vignan’s Foundation for Science Technology and Research (Deemed to be University). Both the teams qualified for competing in the grand finale to be held in Kochi.
As many as 530 students turned up for the first edition of the academic event in Kerala.

Of the total participants, six teams had been selected for the final rounds based on their performance in the scholastic competitions covering the five fields of mathematics quiz, physics quiz, chemistry quiz, elocution in English, and fine arts (music and dance).
Deputy Excise Commissioner V.R. Anilkumar, who gave away trophies and individual medals to the winners, said Academic Pentathlon was an innovative opportunity for students to develop their personality and test their intellectual capacity at various levels. “For me, all those who had taken part in the event were winners for their enthusiasm in searching for new information,” he observed.

An eight-member of panel of experts representing various fields judged the event.
N. Soorya Prakash, senior manager, The Hindu , was the quiz master and anchor of the event.
Similar regional rounds of Academic Pentathlon will be held in Ernakulam, Kannur, Alappuzha, and Kollam ahead of the grand finale.
