Opens second Engineers Congress

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has asked Public Works Department engineers to ensure that planning is completed and the required land acquired before floating bids for works.

Works got dragged on for years with land acquisition remaining incomplete, the Chief Minister said inaugurating the second Engineers Congress organised by the PWD here on Saturday.

The hike in material cost after the awarding of bids often leads to disputes and arbitration. Delays, shortage of funds, lack of expertise, and failure to prepare plan are the hurdles faced by the PWD, he said stressing the need for efficient use of in-house talent for execution of works.

Presiding over the function, Minister for Public Works G. Sudhakaran said the government favoured statutory status for the Engineers Congress to ensure continuity.

“No administrative sanction is needed for repair and maintenance,” he told the engineers, asking them to go by the PWD manual.
