Thiruvananthapuram: The State Cabinet which met here on Wednesday resolved to strengthen the hands of the State Women’s Commission by giving it the power to summon any respondent to collect evidence. It approved a draft Bill for the purpose. Currently, the commission has powers to summon only witnesses.

The Cabinet also cleared a proposal to establish 20 small hydel projects on the build-own-operate-and-transfer (BOOT) model. Envisaged as independent power projects, they would be established under a 30- year contract with private power producers. The power tariff would be decided by the State Regulatory Commission.

The meeting cleared another proposal to sanction 83.98 ares rpt ares of puramboke land in Kanthipara village of Udumbanchola taluk in Idukki to the Civil Supplies Corporation for the construction of a godown for foodgrains. Another 34.95 ares was allotted for the construction of the Kochi City police office.

The Cabinet approved the creation of new posts for the Kannur Corporation, the new taluks at Payyannur and Kunnamkulam, the Hospital for Women and Children, Thycaud, and the Dairy Development check posts at Meenakshipuram, Parassala and Aryankavu.

An amount of ₹75.68 lakh would be sanctioned from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund as financial assistance for the traders who suffered losses in the fire which broke out at the Chalai market on November 14, 2014.
