Kudumbashree area development societies (ADSs) have received a national award from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for increasing their income through sanitation and waste management activities under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission.
Maruthadi ADS in Kollam Corporation and Kanakanchery ADS in Perithalmanna, Malappuram district, received the award.

Ninety women are part of sanitation and waste management activities under the Maruthadi ADS. They produce compost from organic waste.
They also support implementation of green protocol in events by preventing the use of plastic. The women make ₹6,000 a month. Women organising sanitation and waste management activities in Kanakanchery earn ₹5,000 a month.
Representatives of both the ADS and city mission managers will accept the award from the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs in New Delhi on February 15. The first prize is ₹2 lakh, the second prize ₹1.5 lakh, and the third prize ₹1 lakh.

Kudumbashree is the nodal agency for NULM in the State. A selection committee comprising Urban Affairs Director R. Girija and Kudumbashree Executive Director Harikishore S. and former urban programme officer Binu Francis selected 16 applications received from urban local bodies and sent it to the Union Ministry.
Officials of the Quality Council of India visited the 16 ADSs and submitted detailed reports to the Ministry.
