More leptospirosis cases surface in Alappuzha

Health dept strengthens surveillance in district

The rising number of leptospirosis cases in the district has emerged as a cause for concern.

According to Health Department statistics, 73 confirmed cases of leptospirosis have been reported in Alappuzha district.

The cases have been reported from different places in Kuttanad, Haripad, Chengannur, Cherthala, Karthikapally and the Alappuzha municipal area since August 22.

At least two suspected deaths of leptospirosis have been reported during this period, including one death on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Shanmughan, 65, of Alappuzha.

Officials said 25 confirmed and 15 suspected cases of leptospirosis had been reported in the district in the last two days.

H1N1, Dengue

Besides the outbreak of leptospirosis, 10 cases of H1N1 and 8 confirmed cases of dengue fever have been reported in the district in the past one week.

Officials said the Health Department had strengthened surveillance, especially in flood-hit areas in the district. Health volunteers were conducting house-to-house visits.

Awareness

The department has intensified awareness campaigns on leptospirosis and other diseases.

Preventive medicines against leptospirosis had been made available in all health centres and sub-centres in the district.

People can avail themselves of the medicines from health workers.
