District administration pegs losses in the district at Rs.88.54 crore

A team from the Centre visited the district on Sunday to assess calamities caused by the ongoing south-west monsoon.

The district administration submitted to the team a report that pegged losses in the district at Rs.88.54 crore. Details of sector-wise damage were given to the team at a meeting at the Collectorate.

The team comprised G. Balasubramaniam, deputy advisor, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation; R. Elavarasan, regional officer, Road Transport and Highways; and Planning Commission Senior Research Officer A. Muraleedharan.

The district administration told the team that the agriculture sector suffered losses to the tune of Rs.8.61 crore. The monsoon destroyed roads and property, causing losses of Rs.32.21 crore. Damage to State/district roads and the National Highway caused losses of Rs.29.15 crore and Rs.5.5 crore respectively.

The dairy, fisheries, irrigation, drinking water supply and power sectors suffered losses of Rs.30.35 lakh, Rs.1.23 crore, Rs.6.65 crore, Rs.50,63 lakh and Rs.38.98 lakh respectively. Bunds caved in and caused losses of Rs. 2.36 crores. Losses from damage to buildings and landslides were pegged at Rs.1.12 crore and Rs.50 lakh respectively.

The team visited Pullazhi, Elthuruthu, Enammavu, Kuzhiyur and Chazhur, among other places.

District Collector M.S. Jaya, Calamities Relief Wing Deputy Collector E. V. Susheela, Revenue Divisional Officer V. K. Bhargavi and other officials accompanied the team.
