The Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) has mooted a proposal to rotate the heads of departments in the colleges affiliated to it once every three years.

An agreement to this effect was arrived at a meeting of the various college teachers unions, convened by Sabu Thomas, Vice Chancellor-in-charge.

Speaking on the occasion, the VC also directed the unions to submit their suggestions and recommendations on the proposal in writing within 30 days. During the meeting, representatives of the different unions unanimously agreed to the proposal, which aims to bring in efficiency by restructuring the administration of the departments. They, meanwhile, demanded that only the associate and assistant professors having an experience of five years be included in the rotation system.

The varsity, which has already implemented the rotation system in its study centres, plans to introduce the system by the next academic year onwards. Conventionally, colleges appoint senior teachers as Heads of Departments who hold the position till they retire. The varsity is also embarking on a plan to establish a teacher’s portal profiling all the teachers in the various colleges under the MGU.
