The students of the Government Medical College, Ernakulam had given a strike notice to the authorities in view of the acute shortage of faculty.
M. K. Ismail, chairman of the students’ union in the medical college, told The Hindu that they plan to launch the strike towards the end of November if the institution fails to appoint enough teaching faculty by that time.
The notice has been issued much in advance so that the government gets time to arrange teachers for the institution, he said.

The notices have also been sent to the Chief Minister, Health Minister, Director, Medical Education, Health Secretary, Principal, Administrative Officer and the Special Officer, said Mr. Ismail.
Besides teaching and conducting examinations, the medical college with enough doctors will be able to deliver better service to poor patients reaching here, he said.
With shortage of about a hundred doctors, the Government Medical College, Ernakulam, is likely to get an adverse report from the Medical Council of India team during inspection.

According to the Principal, Dr. Ashwini Kumar, the MCI had indicated some days ago about an inspection anytime. “We had indicated to the Health Department regarding the immediate need of at least four professors in four departments to fill the minimum requirement of the departments,” said Dr. Kumar.
The 11 postgraduate seats in five departments are also likely to be under scanner.
