Major sea erosion along the Ajanur beach near Kanhangad on Sunday threatened evacuation of nearly 50 families from the area where sea waters pierced into nearly 25 metres long beach uprooting several coconut trees.
The gushing sea waters virtually swallowed a coastal road close to an estuary as authorities are making arrangements to rehabilitate the affected family members if the situation got further worsened, E. Chandrasekharan, Kanhangad MLA, who visited the spot this morning, said.
Describing the situation as grave, Mr. Chandrasekharan has convened an emergency meeting with senior district officials, marine engineers and representatives of local bodies at the Collectorate Conference hall on Monday to deliberate on the urgent measures to address the situation.

The MLA said most of the fishermen family in the locality appeared to be reluctant to leave their homes to safer places in case of exigencies.
Mr Chandrasekharan said he had asked the District Collector to ensure required relief measures to the affected families.
He said he would contact Chief Minister Oommen Chandy later in the day and apprise him of the situation and the need to build sea wall in the densely populated locality.
