Maharashtra Governor to open CWRDM seminar on climate change

Experts from India and abroad to present papers

Geographers, hydrologists, academicians and researchers of global repute will come together to share their thoughts and expertise on the theme ‘Sustainable natural resources management under changing climatic scenarios' during the three-day International Geography Congress organised by the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) under the aegis of National Association of Geographers of India (NAGI) on the CWRDM campus at Kunnamangalam in Kozhikode from May 6 to 8.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, CWRDM executive director K.V. Jayakumar told reporters here that the congress, which will see more than 150 expert papers being presented by scholars from India and outside, will be inaugurated by Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan on Friday. C.T.S. Nair, Principal Secretary to Science and Technology Department, Government of Kerala, will preside over the inaugural function.

The event aims to highlight the environmental problems associated with development and changing climate across the globe. The meet will feature experts from different parts of India and from countries such as Germany, Italy, Japan and South Africa.

The key speakers at the event include Yukio Himiyama of Hokkaido University, Japan; K. Karunakaran, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore; G. Belleza, vice-president of International Geography Union, Italy; R.K. Rai, president of NAGI; and Udo Schickhoff from the University of Hamburg, among others.

Papers on topics such as agricultural production and food security; environmental pollution and quality of life; geoinformatics; alternative planning and management; geopolitical economy, globalisation, and emerging challenges; impact of anthropogenic activities and climate change on hydrologic process and biodiversity; and impact of population explosion and urbanisation on land use will be presented during the congress.

“It will also be a meeting place of scholars, technologists, environmentalists, planners, policymakers and social workers from different parts of the world,” Dr. Jayakumar said.
