Says Congress is still a major political force

The draft political resolution for the State conference of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), which will be held here from August 6 to 9, says that “a political alternative to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the national level without the Congress is out of question.”

The resolution, which focusses on national politics, says that a political alternative to the BJP without the Congress “is impractical and illogical” because the Congress is a major political force though its strength in the Lok Sabha has reduced to 44.

The Congress still has strong roots across the country. The resolution calls for a broad political alternative comprising all secular and democratic forces “and the RSP is not averse to accepting the Congress as the leader of such an alternative.” Any move to form an alternative by keeping the Congress at bay will only strengthen the BJP.

The resolution says that a third alternative has no scope in the current national political climate. There was scope for a third alternative some years ago but the Communist Party of India (Marxist) unilaterally took a decision to support the Congress then. The CPI(M) also had the opportunity to head a government at the Centre but committed the “historic blunder” of rejecting it, the resolution says.

The resolution says that a third alternative now will only help the BJP. The CPI(M) and the CPI appear to be waiting for the Congress to grow weaker to join hands with that party. But by that time the Left will become insignificant. The resolution says that the “credibility of the Left has been badly eroded in Kerala and now there is a mass exodus from the Left to the BJP.”

The Left warned

The RSP does not want the Left to weaken. But the Left does not mean only the CPI(M) and the CPI. The resolution says that the CPI(M) agenda lacks Marxist perspective. If the CPI(M) and the CPI fail to understand the situation and join hands with a broad alternative comprising the Congress then both those parties could soon get marginalised.

The resolution says that at the State level the RSP is committed to strengthening the United Democratic Front. “This is needed to stop the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh from gaining strength in the State.”
