“Maudany's charge will be probed”

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Mullappally Ramachandran has said that his Ministry will look into People's Democratic Party leader Abdul Nasir Maudany's allegation that “certain officials” in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) had conspired to unjustly implicate him in the 2008 serial blasts in Bangalore.

Mr. Ramachandran told journalists at the Group Centre of the Central Reserve Police Force at Pallippuram here on Sunday that Mr. Maudany's allegations were baseless.

However, the Central government would examine whether any IB officials had overstepped their constitutional limits in the case.

The Minister said the IB was not a charging agency. It collected information and inquired into all matters relating to the Union, its governance and security. No individual or organisation was above IB scrutiny.

The Karnataka Police had arraigned Mr. Maudany as one of the accused in the serial blasts case.

“Law and order is a State subject. If Mr. Maudany is truly innocent, he has nothing to fear.”

Mr. Ramachandran sought to dispel fears that Kerala is threatened by “dangerous levels of Left extremism.” It was possible that certain organisations operating in India, including Kerala, would have links with Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence, he said.
