LDF not to manoeuvre to bring down UDF: Pinarayi

CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan

Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has temporarily closed the discussion on bringing down the Oommen Chandy government saying that his party is not ready for any political manoeuvring to achieve that end.

Mr. Vijayan has no doubt that the United Democratic Front (UDF) government will not complete its term, but was equally certain that “we will not indulge in parliamentary manoeuvring” to expedite that process. This, he told reporters here on Friday, did not mean that “we will not do anything”. Nor did it imply that “we are closing the doors to anyone”.

The CPI(M) State secretary’s remarks came when asked to comment on the reported demand of his party’s allies in the Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) for moves that would put an end to UDF rule.

“This government will fall on its own when the time is appropriate. We have already stated that we are not ready for a hotchpotch arrangement. People wish to see this government fall, but we will not indulge in parliamentary manoeuvring,” he said.

He would not deny or confirm reports that the CPI(M) State committee had adopted a resolution seeking the removal of V.S. Achuthanandan as the Leader of the Opposition and, when asked to comment on the issue, would only urge reporters to be satisfied with the reply they had got from Mr. Achuthanandan on the subject.

“You know that I am not in the habit of discussing such things with the media,” he added. He would not also be drawn into a discussion on Mr. Achuthanandan’s decision to stay away from party State secretariat and State committee meetings, reportedly in protest against what he had termed attempts by the State leadership to corner him.

On whether Mr. Achuthanandan would participate in the national jatha being launched by the party from Kanyakumari on Sunday, he said the decision was that all leaders should take part in the rally.

(At a news conference held a while later, Mr. Achuthanandan said he would indeed participate in it as the decision to take out the jatha was taken by the party Central committee).

The jatha, to press various demands including steps to bring down the prices, would be inaugurated by CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat. It will be led by Polit Bureau member S. Ramachandran Pillai and would have Polit Bureau member M.A. Baby as one of its permanent members.
