District-level Onam-Bakrid Khadi fete inaugurated

Minister for Fisheries J. Mercykutty Amma takes a look at the saris on display after inaugurating the Onam-Bakrid Khadi festival in Kollam on Friday.

The Khadi sector is growing at a fast rate to accommodate 10,000 more labourers, said Minister for Fisheries J. Mercykutty Amma here on Friday.

Inaugurating the district-level Onam-Bakrid Khadi festival at the Khadi and Village Industries office, Karbala Junction, she added that the industry, which had introduced ready-to-wear clothes, should try to be self-sufficient. “The proposal to start readymade garment manufacturing in all units in the district is under consideration. Efforts are also on to tap the market by implementing skill development programmes,” the Minister said.

The government has ensured job security and increments in the sector, said M. Naushad, MLA, who presided over the function. The Kollam Corporation will set up a one-crore readymade warp (khadi) unit to encourage and explore the marketing possibilities of the sector, said Mayor V. Rajendrababu. Corporation councillor Reena Sebastian, Khadi Board member K.M. Chandrasharma, director K.S. Pradeep Kumar, and district information officer C. Ajoy were present.
