Though the electorate in the Kodungalloor constituency stood firm with Congress leader K. Karunakaran for the first seven consecutive elections since 1967, it has been changing its loyalty towards both sides in the last five elections. From the 1996 Assembly election, after the ‘Leader’ quit the constituency, Kodungalloor elected CPI candidates thrice (V.K. Rajan in 1996, U.S. Sasi in 1998, and A.K. Chandran in 2006) and Congress candidates twice (T.U. Radhakrishnan in 2001 and T.N. Prathapan in 2011). The Mala constituency became the Kodungalloor constituency in 2008 after the delimitation process. When Aloor panchayat in the Mala constituency was shifted to the Irinjalakuda constituency, Vellankallur and Puthenchira were added to the new Kodungalloor constituency.
The Kodungalloor constituency now consists of Kodungalloor municipality and the six panchayats of Mala, Poyya, Kuzhur, Annamanada, Puthenchira, and Vellankallur.
In the 2011 Assembly election, T.N. Prathapan defeated K.G. Sivanandan of the CPI with a majority of 9,432 votes. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the LDF got 40.6 per cent votes. When the UDF secured 37.5 per cent votes, the BJP got 14.2 per cent votes.

In the 2015 local body elections, the LDF got 43.62 per cent votes. When the UDF secured 34.79 per cent votes, the BJP improved its vote per cent to 22.94. Though communal equations, group clashes, and regional issues can influence the voters, the parties have to wait till the end to know their final choice.
