The nationwide 24-hour long general strike by major trade unions assumed proportions of a bandh like situation with normal life virtually coming to a standstill in the district.
The strike hit all kinds of commercial activities with shops and other business houses, including banks, joining in the strike expressing solidarity with the striking trade unions which are seeking host of demands.
The schools and other educational institutions remained closed with all modes of public transport vehicles, including the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses keeping off the day in view of the general strike.

The functioning of government offices was also badly hit with most of the employees unable to reach their offices due to crippled vehicular movement as the employees’ attendance registering staggering low, sources here said.
The roads across the district by and large wore a deserted look with only skeletal number of two and four wheelers seen plying merrily. The worst hit were the train passengers who were seen waiting endlessly at the railway stations with their luggage not knowing as to when they could reach their destination.
The neighbouring Kanhangad town also was hit by the strike with normal life in and round the town getting paralysed.

Barring blockade of vehicles by the strike supporters on the National Highway close to new bus station in Kasaragod, no untoward incidents have been reported from any parts of the district, police sources here said.
The trade union activists took out a protest march in major thoroughfares in the district headquarters and Kanhangad and other smaller towns in the district to express solidarity with the striking comrades.
