Kannur’s achievements in e-governance in focus

The district’s achievements in e-governance and e-transaction will be the highlights of Digital India Week programmes to be launched on Wednesday.

Along with the 9-point digital agenda being promoted as part of the programme, to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the district-level programme would also include events to celebrate the achievements of the district in furthering the digital tools to ensure easy service to the public, District Collector P. Bala Kiran said at a press conference here on Tuesday. The district, which emerged as topper in e-transactions in the country, had already recorded big achievements in the e-governance sector, he said adding that in June alone, 1,02,000 certificates had been issued through Akshaya centres. Ever since e-sand facility was started, a total of 2,49,863 e-sand passes had been issued in the district, he added. The Collector also said the Collectorate here and the Sub Collectorate at Thalassery selected for introducing e-office facility would have the new system in six months. An ambitious plan during the Digital Week programme is to ensure maximum enrolment of people from the district in the Digital Locker facility being started nationwide, he said. Each of the 214 Akshaya centres in the district was targeted to have 100 digital lockers.

The facility provides residents with a locker on the cloud and ensures a secure access to government-issued documents through a web portal and mobile application.

Mr. Kiran said the Digital India Week programme was being organised jointly by the district administration, Akshaya Mission and the Revenue IT Cell. The programme was aimed at bridging the digital gap by linking various government departments and agencies in a digital network. The programme’s agenda includes broadband highway, phone connectivity expansion, public internet booths, e-governance, e-Kranti services, access to information, production of electronic products, Information Technology for jobs and speedier achievement.

The Collector said that with the launch of the Digital India Week programme, more services would be offered to the public though the Common Service Centres (Akshaya centres). The events being organised in connection with the programme included quiz and elocution competitions for students, digital painting contest, digital exhibition and quiz competitions for Akshaya entrepreneurs and government employees.

Additional District Magistrate O. Muhammad Aslam and District Informatics Officer Andrews Varghese were also present at the press meet.
