JD(U) comes down heavily on UDF

Meeting gives clear hints of party moving closer to LDF

A State-level meeting of the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] held here on Saturday came down heavily on the United Democratic Front (UDF) indicating that the party would not mind pulling out of the Congress-led coalition in the State.

A meeting of State office-bearers of the erstwhile Socialist Janata (Democratic) assumed significance against the background of the proposed merger of six motley Janata parties at the national level.

At a news conference, JD(U) State unit president M.P. Veerendrakumar said the party was revoltingly disgruntled within the UDF. However, he said the meeting did not examine the party seeking re-entry into the LDF in the light of the Janata convergence.

This should be decided by the national executive of the party.

The two JD(U) legislators would vote for UDF candidates in the coming Rajya Sabha election, he said. Mr. Veerendrakumar demanded to publicise the report of a UDF subcommittee that looked into the defeat of the SJ(D) candidate from the Palakkad Lok Sabha constituency and take appropriate action. Was the report kept buried at the insistence of any individual? he asked.

The JD(U) had to face bitter experience within the UDF. The party was not given the preference even bestowed on the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) that came to the UDF fold in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls last year.
