The Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, (IIM-K), and National Institute of Technology, Calicut, (NIT-C), are contemplating the possibility of implementing 10% reservation for the economically backward in the general category.
Both the top-notch institutes under the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development Development in the State are working out the seat matrix available for various courses, especially the NIT-C. However, the IIM-K is yet to get any official communication from the Ministry on the implementation of the quota .
The Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill, 2019, providing for 10% reservation in government jobs and educational institutions to the economically weaker sections in the general category, was passed by Parliament in its recently concluded winter session and President Ram Nath Kovind has given his assent to the Bill.

Incidentally, results of the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted in November 2018 was declared in January. ‘‘We are in the process of admissions. Usually we plan ahead for the programmes before the admission starts. Certainly the new provision will depend on the capacity and infrastructure. The IIM-K is known for addressing both the issues of social deprivation and economic backwardness during its admission processes.
NIT-C Registrar K. Pankajakshan said the institute had already apprised the Ministry of the need to upgrade and improve infrastructure facilities. It admits over 950 students in various disciplines every year. “Construction of a new hostel for men is going apace. However, a new hostel for women is urgently required as the number of female students on the NIT-C campus is comparatively high than other institutes,” he said.

Students from Kerala get 50% home quota in the NIT-C and these are also again categorised in open seats (gender neural and female only), OBC, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities and persons with disability. Besides, a limited number of seats (15% seats on supernumerary basis) are available for foreign nationals, persons of Indian origin, Non-Resident Indians, Overseas Citizens of India under the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme of MHRD.
