Hartal peaceful in Wayanad

The state wide dawn to-dusk hartal observed on Monday by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in protest against the price hike of petrol was total and peaceful in Wayanad district.

Shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed. Attendance was low in Government offices.

Only 75 out of the 179employees turned up for the duty at the collectorate here, P. Arumughan, Additional District Magistrate told The Hindu.

Private buses and four-wheelers stayed off the road. People were seen riding two-wheelers.

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation operated each schedule from Sulthan Bathery depot to Gundlepet in Karnataka state and Coimbatore in Tamilnadu state in the morning. But a schedule to Kozhikode with the help of police convoy was cancelled after the hartal supporters had blocked the bus at Sulthan Bathery town in the noon .

A long queue of vehicles was seen at Madhur and Muthanga check posts on the border of Kerala and Karnataka states.

No hartal –related untoward incidents have been reported, Neeraj Kumar Gupta, Superintendent of Police(SP), Kozhikode Rural, who is in charge of the Wayanad SP, said.

However, there were reports of hartal supporters obstructing vehicles on the road at Sulthan Bathery.

The hartal supporters took out protest marches at local and district levels.
