The long-cherished fishing harbour projects at Cheruvathur and Kasaragod is all set to be commissioned soon, opening doors for fishing activities in the district.
With the authorities giving finishing touches to the works, the Cheruvathur harbour will be commissioned by May end thus becoming the first fishing harbour in the district.
The Kasaragod harbour, whose left-over drainage works are moving in rapid pace, is expected to be opened in July, official sources here said.

The Rs.29.06-crore Cheruvathur harbour built with assistance from Central and State governments, is situated five km away from the Cheruvathur town.
The harbour, whose works began in 2011, could anchor over 300 fishing boats with other smaller varieties, and is expected to provide direct employment to around 1,000 persons. It will also generate indirect employment to over 4,000 people.
The harbour is equipped with fish auctioning stalls, canteen, and other allied facilities. The fishing harbour will help the fishermen make use of 270 fishing days a year, they said.

The Rs.29.75-crore Kasaragod fishing harbour is coming up at Kizhoor beach locality, and will help generate direct employment to 1,200 people while 4,000 will benefit indirectly from the project.
The works of the Manjeshwaram fishing harbour, the third of its kind in the district, is expected to commence in September next.
