September 26, 2018 12:34 am | Updated 12:35 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram

The Director of Health Services has issued a public health alert against H1N1, which is being reported now from Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts.

Those developing fever, cold, and body ache should take precautions and seek the advice of a medical practitioner if their symptoms do not resolve within reasonable time.

The anti-viral drug oseltamivir is available in all government hospitals and Karunya pharmacies and must be taken only on the advice of the treating doctor.

Public should pay more attention to the cold etiquette, such as covering their nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing, as H1N1 is an air-borne disease. Frequent hand washing should be practised and those with cold or fever should avoid public places and stay home and rest.

Children should not be sent to school if they have cold or cough.

Pregnant women who develop any cold or flu-like symptoms should immediately consult a doctor and take oseltamivir as they could be highly vulnerable to contracting H1N1.

Those with co-morbidities like diabetes, heart diseases, hypertension or renal/liver issues should also take special care, the alert says.
