Governor has no power to summon CM: Kanam

CPI State unit secretary Kanam Rajendran has taken exception to Governor Sathasivam’s ‘summoning’ of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday for discussing the law-and-order situation in the State.

Mr. Rajendran told the media here on Monday that the Governor did not have the power to do so. “My firm view is that the Governor has no such powers,” he said. “According to the Constitution, the Governor has to act on the recommendations of the elected Council of Ministers. The Governor cannot dictate terms to the Cabinet.”

Mr. Rajendran said he believed the Governor knew his Constitution well and that perhaps the Governor must have invited the Chief Minister for a ‘friendly talk’.

Asked for his comments on Mr. Vijayan’s allegedly rude behaviour with mediapersons in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday morning, he said this was not a ‘big issue.’ “Apparently, he did not mean it to be rude,” Mr. Rajendran said and suggested that the Chief Minister’s ‘folksy style’ must have caused the misunderstanding.
