Arrangements are being made to provide a festive charm to the function at Kavanad on April 10 being organised for the inauguration on the third phase construction works of the 18.30 km Kallumthazham to Kavanad stretch of the Kollam bypass to the National Highway 47.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari will inaugurate the constructions works and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will preside over the function. A meeting of the function’s reception committee held at the collectorate conference hall on Monday took the decision to ensure maximum people’s participation in the function.
District Collector A. Kowsigan said that special invitation will be accorded to the people from whom land was acquired for laying the bypass. Transport arrangements will also be made to bring in people for the function from various places. The function is fixed to be held at 9.30 a.m. at Altharamoodu junction.

Chairman of the reception committee, N.K. Premachandran, MP, said that care should be taken to ensure that the junction at Kavanad where the bypass meets the National Highway is scientifically constructed. If there is a need, an expert study should be conducted for the purpose, he said.
He said that local-level meetings will be held within the next seven days at Thrikadavur, Mangad, Kallumthazham and Shakthikulangara to ensure the success of the inaugural function. Ministers V.K. Ebrahim Kunju and Shibu Baby John, MPs, MLAs and Mayor Honey Benjamin will speak at the inaugural function.
The third phase stretch of the bypass will comprise three bridges, one of which at Kandachira will be of 900 meters. The allocation for the works is Rs. 352 crore. The funding is on a 50:50 basis by the Central and State governments.
