Fresh statement by actor recorded in assault case

Evidence hints at involvement of people from film field in attack

With fresh leads pointing to criminal conspiracy emerging in the case pertaining to the abduction and sexual attack on an actor in the city in February this year, ADGP B. Sandhya, who heads the probe team, recorded a fresh statement from the actor at the Police Club in Aluva on Friday.

The police had earlier filed a charge sheet against seven persons, with Sunil Kumar Surendran aka Pulsar Suni figuring as the prime accused in the case.

Low-key probe

Lodged as an undertrial in the district jail at Kakkanad, Suni was kept under tight watch by the police, while they took care to create the impression that the investigation was nearly over. From questioning Jinson, Suni’s cell mate in jail and an accused in a case registered by the Nedumbassery police, the police reportedly received fresh leads following which the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ernakulam, granted them permission to produce Jinson in front of a magistrate for obtaining his statement under Section 164 of CrPC.

While this would be done in the next few days, the actor’s statement was taken again on Friday to corroborate the information provided by Jinson. The police have remained tight-lipped on the recent developments in the case, but it is believed that fresh evidence buttresses the conspiracy angle and hints at the involvement of people from the film field in the attack, which took place in a moving car on the night of February 17.

The police are expected to seek approval from the court for further investigation once clinching evidence pertaining to the conspiracy angle is obtained.
