Radio Mattoli, the exclusive community radio channel for tribespeople in the district, will now reach more and more tribal hamlets in the region, thanks to a project to provide free radio receivers to tribespeople.
The project, of the Chennai-based Rajeev Gandhi National Institute for Youth Development (RGNIYD), was launched in the district at Thavinjal near Mananthavadi on Sunday by Minister for Scheduled Tribes Welfare and Youth Affairs Minister P.K. Jayalakshmi.
Lauding Radio Mattoli for its remarkable service to the tribal community of the region in a short span of time, the Minister said many a programme in tribal language of the community radio were potent enough to open new vistas among the tribespeople on current affairs and general knowledge about the world.

As per the project, 500 radio receivers would be provided in the first phase, a press release issued here on Monday said.
It would be disbursed to the tribal colonies, tribal residential schools, and pre-metric hostels in the district soon, Thomas Joseph Therakam, Station Director, Mattoli Radio said.
Lissy Jose, President Thavinjal grama panchayat, presided over the function.
