The National Council member of Communist Party of India (CPI) K.E. Ismail, M.P, has said that “the foundation stone for the Palakkad Rail Coach factory was laid recently with an eye on the by-election in Piravom Assembly constituency.”

Inaugurating the protest march organized by the CPI in front of the District Collectorate on Wednesday to the alleged neglect of the Palakkad in sanctioning development projects like a Medical College, Indian Institute of Technology etc., the CPI leader said that initially the Railways had announced that it will invest Rs.5,000 crore for the Coach factory. But now it is brought down to just Rs.500 crore.

The previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) had given 431 acres of land free of cost. But now the Railway wanted only 237 acres of land. Thus the three decade long wait for the Coach factory was in vain for the people of the District, he said.

“When the State government announced four new medical colleges recently it has not considered the demand of the people of Palakkad to convert the District Hospital as a medical college since this backward district lacked medical facilities”, he said.

The meeting was addressed by CPI state committee member V. Chamunni, former Deputy Speaker Jose Baby among others.

It was presided over by district secretary of the party K.P. Sureshraj.
