Footballer K. Hashim dead

Veteran Kerala footballer K. Hashim died at his residence.

Veteran footballer K. Hashim died at his residence here on Tuesday. He was 63.

The funeral was held at the Kannur City Juma Masjid.

Hashim had been playing football since his high school days at the Kannur Municipal High School. He had begun playing football for the Gymkhana Club here in 1966, joined Mahindra & Mahindra as storekeeper in 1969, and played for its football team till a year before his retirement in 1982. Hashim had represented Kerala in the 1967-68 junior national championship held in Assam and played in the 1970-71 junior international championship in Tokyo, and the 1971-72 junior international in Bangkok.

He had represented Maharashtra in the Santhosh Trophy championship in 1971-72, 1972-73, and 1973-74. He played for India in the qualifying round of the pre-Olympics championship in Rangoon (re-christened Yangon) in 1972-73.

After his retirement as football player, he had settled in Kozhikode for several years till he shifted to his hometown here following his illness. He is survived by wife and two children.
