The government, on Tuesday, issued orders approving the recommendations of the National Human Rights Commission to pay compensation to the victims of endosulfan.
The action was taken in the backdrop of the commission asking Chief Secretary K. Jayakumar to be present in person before it if the government failed to act on the recommendations before June 4.
Accordingly, bed-ridden victims will be sanctioned Rs.5 lakh, of which Rs.3 lakh is proposed to be paid in instalments. The balance will be deposited in their bank accounts so that they can be paid Rs.2,000 a month each for five years using the interest. The balance will be refundable after five years.

An amount of Rs.3 lakh will be sanctioned to victims with various kinds of disabilities. Of that, Rs. 2 lakh will be paid in instalments and the balance deposited with banks. They will get Rs.1,000 a month for five years after which the principle will have to be refunded.
The government order said the amount needed for paying the compensation would be shared equally by the government and Plantation Corporation of Kerala Ltd.
