Eleven killed in accidents

Two four-year-old boys and two teenage girls among the dead

Eleven persons were killed in accidents in the State on Wednesday.

Four persons, including two four-year-old boys, and an 18-year-old girl, were killed and 10 others, most of them women, were grievously injured in a collision between a private bus and an autorickshaw on the busy Kanhangad-Kasaragod State Highway. The dead were in the autorickshaw, along with six others who were injured.

The accident occurred at 11.45 a.m. at Poochakad, the police said quoting initial reports. The speeding bus collided with the autorickshaw while trying to overtake another vehicle, the police quoting eyewitnesses said. The autorickshaw was completely damaged in the incident.

While two persons died on the spot, one succumbed to injuries on the way to the Pariyaram Cooperative Medical College Hospital. The victims were identified as Shibithi (Monutan), 4, son of Vinu and Mini, residents of nearby Ajanur; Mahith, 4, son of Mahendran-Aneesha; Anjitha, 18, daughter of Bharathan and Sindhu; and autorickshaw driver, Ratheesh (28).

Local people blocked the road for a while to protest against the rash driving on the road. They also threw stones at a few buses in nearby Manikoth and Athinjhal localities.

In another accident at Gundalpettu in Karnataka, three members of a family were killed when the car they were travelling in was hit by another vehicle. The victims were identified as P. Rajiv, 48, of Avanamkode, near Nedumbasesry, his wife, Asha, 40 and younger daughter, Arati, 15. The couple’s elder daughter Athira, 20, was admitted to a hospital with injuries. The accident occurred at 7.30 a.m. The family was returning after visiting relatives in Bangalore.

Sreedharan, 59, of Pilakkool under the Panur police station was fatally knocked down by a car at 1.45 p.m. He was taken to a hospital but could not be saved.

Two persons were killed in a collision between a private bus and an autorickshaw at Thriprayar on the National Highway 17. They were identified as Abdul Salim, 32, driver of the auto-rickshaw and Rafeeq, 35, a passenger in the three-wheeler.

In another accident reported from Kattapana, one person was killed and seven others were injured when the mini-lorry in which they were travelling fell into a 25-ft gorge near Wagamon. There were 18 persons in the vehicle. The police identified the dead as Mattancherry Kappalandimukku Kuruppanveetil K.P. Ismail, 65. Those injured were given preliminary treatment there and shifted to a hospital at Thodupuzha.
