DYFI march: Dist. Panchayat member arrested for destruction of public property

District Panchayat member and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) leader P.K. Shabareesh was arrested by the police here on Saturday in connection with the case relating to destruction of public property during the Collectorate march here on March 21.

The police arrested him at the Science Park here at the end of a function attended by Rural Development Minister K.C. Joseph. The police personnel who waited outside the venue till the function was over and he delivered the vote of thanks before they went to arrest him. The arrest followed the departure of the Minister after inaugurating the 10th anniversary of the Science Park here in the morning. When the police personnel led by Town Circle Inspector P. Sukumaran reached the venue and told him that he was under arrest in connection with the case, the district panchayat member resisted. The police then picked him up and taken to the police vehicle.

The Collectorate suffered extensive damages on March 21, when window panes and glass doors at the main entrance to the Collectorate building had been smashed in heavy stone-pelting by DYFI and All India Youth Federation during their march to protest against the raising of the retirement age of the government employees. Several activists of the youth organisations had been already arrested in connection with the incident.
